Noise Barriers
Noise barriers or screens placed in the free space sound propagation path will block some of the sound energy and create a relatively quiet zone in the acoustic "shadow".
However, when barriers are used in semi-echoic indoor environments where sound is reflected and re-reflected from all interior surfaces, noise will be transmitted to the shadow area by the reverberation component of the sound field and the barrier's effectiveness will be severely reduced.
In this sense, the effective use of noise barriers can only be considered in the open area or in non-resonant environments. In particularly favorable conditions, they can provide sound reduction of up to 15 dBA.
However, it is unrealistic to expect better than 10 dBA and in many cases it will be seen that the net sound reduction provided by a barrier is dependent on precise measurement and design that can afford the cost.
Screening a sound source is not like a sharp-edged shadow created from a light source. Because the wavelength of low frequency sound is usually greater than or equal to the dimensions of the barrier, most of this low frequency is refracted around the panel. However, high-frequency sound propagation is better controlled and there appears to be a more pronounced loss of sound on the quiet side of the barrier.
